Today’s engineers and scientists must tailor knowledge to the context of their work, and be conversant with processes of creativity, innovation, and discovery. Pursuant to this, the SII center’s workforce development mission will provide training that emphasizes collaborative value creation and societal benefits for next generation of professionals working in the spectrum domain. Four challenges need to be addressed:

  • An estimated global skilled workforce talent gap of 3 million engineers, due to rapid development and deployments of wireless technologies and policies that enhance spectrum utilization
  • Existing K-12 and university education systems do not provide future wireless and spectrum professionals with requisite training to work in the technology and public sectors = A strong industry market for engineering and computer science graduates with appropriate skills, leading to small numbers continuing into research or academic careers
  • Underrepresentation of women, minorities, and people with disabilities across talent pipeline.
