A second testbed resource available to the team is the “WiNEST-mini” wide-area vehicular testbed and infrastructure for various forms of mobile experimentation operated by PI Banerjee in Wisconsin. The testbed consists of a number of building-mounted wireless nodes (LTE base stations, whitespace radios, and more), edge computing units (based on ParaDrop technology developed by the PI), and various forms of vehicle-mounted nodes, which can include spectrum monitoring sensors. This infrastructure can be used for different types of experimentation. WiNEST also has an arrangement with the local transit operator, Madison Metro Transit, which allows the deployment of such wireless hardware into a large number of their buses. PI Banerjee also has an ongoing collaboration with the entire county of Oneida in northern Wisconsin to setup a rural wireless experimentation testbed.
